Travelling with jewellery
Hotel pools, sunscreen, humidity and suitcases are hard on silver. A light, smart way to take your favourite pairs with you.
Travel is where favourite earrings get lost, tangled or tarnished. A few habits keep them safe.
Pack
- Carry-on, always. Never check jewellery in hold luggage.
- One pair per bag. Small zip bags, air pressed out, each with a scrap of anti-tarnish strip.
- A pill organiser makes a brilliant travel case: one pair per compartment, nothing tangles.
On the trip
- Pools and the sea: take earrings off. Chlorine and salt are tough on silver, finishes and some stones.
- Hot springs: leave them in the room. Many are rich in sulfur, and silver can darken almost instantly.
- Sunscreen and insect repellent: apply, let it dry, then put earrings on.
- Humidity: in tropical climates, pack a silica gel sachet with your bags.
Coming home
Give everything a gentle wipe, check stones and backs, and let pieces air out for an hour before sealing them away again.
